1992 Flight to Australia


In the winter of 1991-92 there was a new expedition to far Australia (Canberra) and as before, the basic technical maintenance of flight lain on Aist club's shoulders.


The farewell was joyful. A year of doubts and confidence, purposefulness and despair, bustle and negotiating tables was left behind... And what was the presentation in TASS some days before the start. How many warm words were told, greetings and parting words received. Stop - it's ended! We fly.


And that's the start. The first taking off from our favorite airfield Tushino is An-2 operated by Oleg Lyakishev and Nikolay Gromtsev with engineer Oleg Matveev. Six Yak-18Т are the next. They are operated by Victor Zabolotsky and Valery Kolomojtsev, Boris Volkov and Andrey Volkov - father and the son, Vladimir Gubarev and Oleg Strukov, Vadim Nesterov and Tatarhan Kubanow, Sergey Kornilov and Vladimir Beluhin, Dmitry Suharev and Alexander.


Route of flight:


Moscow - Canberra Moscow - Kazan - Saransk - Ulyanovsk - Bugulma - Ufa - Chelyabinsk - Petropavlovsk - Omsk - Kuibyshev - Tomsk - Krasnoyarsk - Nizhneudinsk - Irkutsk - Chita.

Further the route passed through China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand:
Chita - Hanar - Baicheng - Shenyang - Jinzhou - Pekin - Shijiazhuang - Zhengzhou - Wuhan - Changsha - Guilin - Nanning - Hanoi - Viangohan - Bangkok.

Then through Malaysia and Indonesia:
Bangkok - Surit Thani - Malacca - Singapore - Palembang - Jakarta - Semarang - Surabaya - Cereweh - Wangpau - Kupang - Wyndham.

И наконец, вот она - Австралия:
Wyndham - Darwin - Daly Waters - Tennant Creek - Alice Springs - Oodnadatta - Leigh Creek - Adelaide - Mount Gambier - Melbourne - Canberra.


There are a lot of Russians in Australia. We were the first citizens of Russia who carried out the National flag for its limits. Especially Russians perceived it in Australia as the fact of the big importance. It was very pleasant for them - real Russians arrived under their flag. We were the first who united all the Russians in Australia - red, dark blue, yellow and others.


They said: "We gathered together for the first time, we, Russians, are one family. All of us are called Russians abroad".
Compatriots told us: "Russia returned. Russia that we have left or we know from the words of our ancestors". They are ready to come to Russia and help us. They met us at a level of statesmen of rather high rank. They received us in parliament. There was a change of the government in Canberra just at that time, but nevertheless in the first day of staying on a post the new prime minister transferred the repeated invitation to the President of Russia to visit Australia. It is now considered almost dishonorable to use something in political purposes. But it all depends on policy! Assistants to Ministers for Foreign Affairs accepted us with Igor Volk in Vietnam and China. It means that it was necessary for them.
From conversation with the Australian pilot the lieutenant colonel of stock Ron Lowford who met us in the Australian sky with his family airflight, and then under influence of our flight changed plans of the next travel and instead of America arrived to Russia:


- During the last forty years Russia represented rather original interest for us - alongside with China she was not the friend of Australia. But it was not indifferent to us, what planes are in Russia. Fighting, certainly. It was fully unexpectable for us was, that you have Yak-18Т, and now I have seen "Stayer" also and flied on it. We thought, that everything that flies in Russia is used for war preparations. I changed my opinion now. I am confident, that you can have same amateur aircraft, as in Australia in 5-10 years. It is necessary for you to have more such people, as Nikolay Gromtsev and his companions - vigorous, purposeful optimists.


Route of return flight:

Canberra-Moscow Canberra - Sydney - Port Macquarie - Brisbane - Burdaberg - Mackay - Townsville - Hughenden - Mount Isa - Daly Waters - Darwin - Wyndham - Kupang - Wangpau - Cereweh - Surabaya - Semarang - Jakarta - Palembang - Singapore - Malacca - Surit Thani - Bangkok - Viangohan - Hanoi - Nanning - Guilin - Changsha - Wuhan - Zhengzhou - Shijiazhuang - Pekin - Jinzhou Shenyang - Baicheng - Hanar - Chita - Irkutsk - Nizhneudinsk - Krasnoyarsk - Tomsk - Kuibyshev - Omsk - Petropavlovsk - Chelyabinsk - Ufa - Bugulma - Ulyanovsk - Saransk - Kazan - Moscow.


Well that's all. Air flight is completed. 46000 kilometers are left behind.


The international flights experience gave us very much, and first of all showed a level of development of private aircraft all over the world. Really, it is better to see it once. And today, working in Russia, we try to support a due level of flights' safety and aviation service. There is on what to be equaled.
